Poem by Russell D Walker, 1995
Inspired after the bombing as I drove by Heffner Lake.
THE CITY
Remember
how you told me, a long, long time ago,
How you loved
to see the skyline, the city lights aglow.
Standing there at waters edge, the boats, their sails so white,
In the evening, when the waters calm, the waves that shimmer light.
There’s that old
familiar feeling, that something’s going on,
Excitement
in the city, you’ve been away from it too long.
There’s music, dining, dancing, there’s always something
fun,
Once again you feel you’re living, like your
life has just begun.
The city with it’s traffic, there’s people everywhere,
The Freeway takes you, missed your turn, LOOK OUT, no don’t you dare.
There’s
hockey and there’s baseball, Holidays to celebrate,
Come
on let’s go, so much to do before it gets too late.
Shopping
oh so busily, no time to shop for all,
You blew your
day, you blew your pay, you spent it at the mall.
You saw it in the window, a dress beyond compare,
You’re going out tonight with nothing new, not a single thing to wear.
So
you buy it and you put it on and oh it feels so good,
In
the city lights you’re looking fine, just like you knew you would.
You remember how it use to be,
but, tonight a brand new date,
You’re going out
with someone new, you hope he won’t be late.
It turns out he is handsome, so gentile, debonair,
You thank the Lord you found the dress, He compliments your hair.
An evening in the city,
just see how the time flies,
The city makes the magic,
see the sparkle in his eyes.
He takes you home, walks to your door, says thank you for the night,
It feels as if you’re in a dream, he may be Mr. Right!
He pulls you close
and looks at you, you think you’re gonna melt
He
kisses you, you’re trembling…..it’s the best you’ve ever felt.
So remember when you’re
far away, the city lights will call,
The city is a special
place, there’s something for us all.
A place to work, a place to play, a place in which to roam,
More importantly, the city is, the place that we call home.
